Psilocybe Hoogshagenii “Brazil” Research Plate
$30.00
Psilocybe hoogshagenii grow either solitarily or in small clusters, typically in humus or muddy clay soils within subtropical coffee plantations. According to the native people of the San Agustin Loxicha region in Mexico, the fungus tends to fruit in large, simultaneous flushes. In Mexico, fruiting occurs between June and July, while in Argentina, it typically fruits in February. The species has been reported in Mexico, specifically in the states of Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, where it thrives at elevations ranging from 3,300 to 5,900 feet. In South America, P. hoogshagenii is also found in Brazil and Colombia. The variety P. hoogshagenii var. convexa has been documented in grasslands in Hidalgo and Oaxaca, with its highest prevalence in Puebla, where it fruits from June to August.
Psilocybe hoogshagenii is used for entheogenic or spiritual purposes by some Chinantec-speaking curanderos in the Ixtlán District of Oaxaca. The mushrooms are primarily used for diagnosing and prognosing illnesses, and to a lesser extent, for locating lost or stolen objects or animals. Guzmán also notes its contemporary ceremonial use by Mixe and Zapotec communities. In his book Psilocybe Mushrooms of the World, Paul Stamets classifies the mushroom’s psychoactive potency as “moderately active,” reporting psilocybin levels of 0.6% and psilocin of 0.1%. In comparison, Psilocybe cubensis contains 0.63% psilocybin and 0.60% psilocin, while the widely found Psilocybe semilanceata has 0.98% psilocybin and 0.02% psilocin. Chemical analysis of P. hoogshagenii specimens from Brazil revealed psilocybin levels of up to 0.3% and psilocin levels of 0.3%. Additionally, this species is utilized in mushroom cultivation, particularly for the myceliated grain technique, as it produces significant amounts of psilocybin during the mycelium phase.
