Psilocybe Aztecorum “Veracruz” Research Plate
$30.00
Psilocybe Aztecorum is a lignicolous species that thrives by decaying dead wood, leaves, sticks, and other organic debris. The mushrooms often grow in groups of 5 to 20, sometimes forming bundles. Common substrates include wood debris buried in soil, twigs, very decayed logs, and occasionally pine cones. This species is typically found in woodlands, particularly low-density forests that allow sunlight to reach the forest floor. These habitats often contain Hartweg’s pine (Pinus hartwegii), as well as grasses like Festuca tolucensis and Muhlenbergia quadridentata, and the herbaceous plant Alchemilla procumbens, at elevations between 3,200–4,000 meters. The type specimens were discovered by Heim at an altitude of 3,500 meters in an alpine pine forest. Psilocybe aztecorum fruits from August to October.
The species is found exclusively in the high mountains of central Mexico, particularly in regions like Sierra Nevada, Nevado de Toluca, and La Malinche, within the states of Mexico, Puebla, and Tlaxcala. Guzmán suggests that it likely also grows in other high-mountain areas with similar ecological conditions, such as the states of Nuevo León, Veracruz, Colima, and Chiapas. The variety bonetii shares the same habitat but prefers forests dominated by Montezuma pine (Pinus montezumae) and sacred fir (Abies religiosa) at elevations of 2,000–3,300 meters. It does not occur in Hartweg’s pine forests and is found only in Mexico, particularly in the states of Mexico, Morelos, and the Federal District. Ps.aztecorum typically fruits from August to November. Guzmán has raised concerns about the conservation of Ps. aztecorum due to the ongoing loss of its natural habitat.
